2Chr 30:9 For if ye turn again unto the LORD, your brethren and your children [shall find] compassion before them that lead them captive, so that they shall come again into this land: for the LORD your God [is] gracious and merciful, and will not turn away [his] face from you, if ye return unto him.

2Chr 30:6 So the posts went with the letters from the king and his princes throughout all Israel and Judah, and according to the commandment of the king, saying, Ye children of Israel, turn again unto the LORD God of Abraham, Isaac, and Israel, and he will return to the remnant of you, that are escaped out of the hand of the kings of Assyria.

2Chr 30:7 And be not ye like your fathers, and like your brethren, which trespassed against the LORD God of their fathers, [who] therefore gave them up to desolation, as ye see.

"What arguments he uses to persuade them to do this. First, "You are children of Israel, and therefore stand related, stand obliged, to the God of Israel, from whom you have revolted." Secondly, "The God you are called to return to is the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, a God in covenant with your first fathers, who served him and yielded themselves to him; and it was their honour and happiness that they did so." Thirdly, "Your late fathers that forsook him and trespassed against him have been given up to desolation; their apostasy and idolatry have been their ruin, as you see (v. 7); let their harms be your warnings." Fourthly, "You yourselves are but a remnant narrowly escaped out of the hands of the kings of Assyria (v. 6), and therefore are concerned to put yourselves under the protection of the God of your fathers, that you be not quite swallowed up." Fifthly, "This is the only way of turning away the fierceness of God's anger from you (v. 8), which will certainly consume you if you continue stiff-necked." Lastly, "If you return to God in a way of duty, he will return to you in a way of mercy." This he begins with (v. 6) and concludes with, v. 9. In general, "You will find him gracious and merciful, and one that will not turn away his face from you, if you seek him, notwithstanding the provocations you have given him." Particularly, "You may hope that he will turn again the captivity of your brethren that are carried away, and bring them back to their own land." Could any thing be expressed more pathetically, more movingly? Could there be a better cause, or could it be better pleaded?"

I want us to understand Matthew Henry's intention in the use of the word "Pathetically". Often we attribute a common vernacular definition which was actually not the intention of these older authors.

Ambassadors of Christ
We are called as Ambassadors of Christ who came and died to save sinners upon whom the wrath of God abides. 
2Cor 5:18 And all things [are] of God, who hath reconciled us to himself by Jesus Christ, and hath given to us the ministry of reconciliation;

2Cor 5:19 To wit, that God was in Christ, reconciling the world unto himself, not imputing their trespasses unto them; and hath committed unto us the word of reconciliation.

2Cor 5:20 Now then we are ambassadors for Christ, as though God did beseech [you] by us: we pray [you] in Christ’s stead, be ye reconciled to God.

2Cor 5:21 For he hath made him [to be] sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him.

Strengthened by Jehovah
Hezekiah means "Strengthened of JAH". The name comes from two root words. One means "Possessed" and one means "JAH". Think of it! Are we, who are Christ's not inhabited by the very Spirit of God? To conduct ourselves about His business is to do so by His Spirit. Therefore when we extend the warnings of wrath and the Grace of God, the Spirit of God goes to work in the heart of our subjects, inclining the hearts of those "who have ears to hear", toward God that they may respond and be saved.

Endued with the Presence of God
Christians who are truly regenerated and born again by the Spirit of God are also "Strengthened of JAH", or as Paul put it, endued with  1) "his working, which worketh in me mightily", and 2)"Power that works us".

While we do emphatically hold out the grave warning that the wrath of God is coming upon this Nation and many will die, we do not so to the neglect of the Mercy and Graciousness of God who is ready to pardon and to save.

Jesus Christ is your only Hope.
Judgement is coming upon America. The hand of God will NOT be stayed. However there is hope for you personally. Seek Jesus Christ today, while He may be found, He will not reject you but will transform you and deliver you from the powers of darkness to which you have been a victim all these years.

AS YE SEE
Just take a look around and see the state of the Church today. Take a look around and see the state of this Nation today. If you can't see or won't see the sad and reprehensible state of the Church and this Nation then you will have opportunity to see when the wrath of God is upon both; if you live through it. Already there are and have been for a long time, watchmen and messengers of God heralding the sad fact of the apostasy and warning of the impending and unstayable wrath of God. The wrath of God is coming upon the Church and this Nation. It will not be stayed. You who survive will have the opportunity to look around and see with your eyes, the devastation. 

There will be those called of God, even as Hezekiah, the one whose name means "helped of JAH", to tell you why the wrath of God has come and why it rests on the Church and this Nation. They will direct you to repentance. They will extend the Grace of God to you to return to proper service and worship of the Most High God through Faith in Jesus Christ and His shed blood, death and resurrection from the dead, by the power of His Spirit and His Spirit alone. The money will be gone. The comforts will be gone. The entertainment and the light shows will be gone. The gimmicks and the prosperity garbage will be gone. The heaping up of books and CD's will be gone. At that time you will see of what sort your faith has been.  All that will be left is you and Jesus Christ. 

Even in the midst of this severe chastisement of God, His grace will be extended to you who survive and live through it. But don't think you can merely puff at these words and just wait till it happens. Now is the time of repentance. Now is the time to turn back to God and a pure and sincere faith.  Now is the time to come out of Babylon and fantasy Christianity. You are being warned that you may not live through what's coming. 

Rev 3:14 And unto the angel of the church of the Laodiceans write; These things saith the Amen, the faithful and true witness, the beginning of the creation of God;

Rev 3:15 I know thy works, that thou art neither cold nor hot: I would thou wert cold or hot.

Rev 3:16 So then because thou art lukewarm, and neither cold nor hot, I will spue thee out of my mouth.

Rev 3:17 Because thou sayest, I am rich, and increased with goods, and have need of nothing; and knowest not that thou art wretched, and miserable, and poor, and blind, and naked:

Rev 3:18 I counsel thee to buy of me gold tried in the fire, that thou mayest be rich; and white raiment, that thou mayest be clothed, and [that] the shame of thy nakedness do not appear; and anoint thine eyes with eyesalve, that thou mayest see.

Rev 3:19 As many as I love, I rebuke and chasten: be zealous therefore, and repent.

"...And Begin At My Sanctuary..."

The judgment of God is about fall on this Nation. Many who survive will come to understand some of the reasons why God has judged this Nation and the Church in it. The voice of warning has been sounded throughout the land. The people do not listen, the people do not heed. Many will believe however, after the hand of God strikes this Nation and the Church in it. At that time God will have some of you in place to say as Hezekiah did, "turn again to the LORD God of Abraham, Isaac, and Israel, and he will return to the remnant of you, that are escaped out of the hand of the kings of Assyria." The rest of you better pray that you live through it. 

If you can't see the prophetic message being spoke out of these ancient texts like Hezekiah and and Gideon's accounts, then, if you read your bible, you ought to see the ways and patterns of God who does not change. By that alone you need to come to grips with the fact that the hand of God is about to strike this Nation in His hot displeasure. But, like I said, there will be those among the ones who survive the ordeal that will know after it happens, that indeed the warnings were real and the messengers of God were telling the truth. We will be here to help you return to the Lord your God when the time comes.

Judg 6:1 And the children of Israel did evil in the sight of the LORD: and the LORD delivered them into the hand of Midian seven years.

Judg 6:2 And the hand of Midian prevailed against Israel: [and] because of the Midianites the children of Israel made them the dens which [are] in the mountains, and caves, and strong holds.

Judg 6:3 And [so] it was, when Israel had sown, that the Midianites came up, and the Amalekites, and the children of the east, even they came up against them;

Judg 6:4 And they encamped against them, and destroyed the increase of the earth, till thou come unto Gaza, and left no sustenance for Israel, neither sheep, nor ox, nor ass.

Judg 6:5 For they came up with their cattle and their tents, and they came as grasshoppers for multitude; [for] both they and their camels were without number: and they entered into the land to destroy it.

Judg 6:6 And Israel was greatly impoverished because of the Midianites; and the children of Israel cried unto the LORD.

Judg 6:7 And it came to pass, when the children of Israel cried unto the LORD because of the Midianites,

Judg 6:8 That the LORD sent a prophet unto the children of Israel, which said unto them, Thus saith the LORD God of Israel, I brought you up from Egypt, and brought you forth out of the house of bondage;

Judg 6:9 And I delivered you out of the hand of the Egyptians, and out of the hand of all that oppressed you, and drave them out from before you, and gave you their land;

Judg 6:10 And I said unto you, I [am] the LORD your God; fear not the gods of the Amorites, in whose land ye dwell: but ye have not obeyed my voice.

In the Judges 6 example we see that there was a remnant saved from death.

Look here at this example in Gideon’s time, during this seven years they had again been reduced to but a few and to a pitiful, weak and impoverished state. Those who survive the ordeal are the ones who can be helped by this hope of a temporary judgment having in design the restoration of a people to their God for all eternity! In this we need to be fearful and cautious; for who knows who will live through the season of chastisement to see the hope and who will not?

When death befalls you, you want to be found in the favor of God and in holiness and not be found in the company of the devil and in the chains of sin. For the chains of sin are fastened upon the beds of hell and to die therein is to remain therein. But to die in Christ is to remain in Him for all eternity.

Will you be found in Him? That is your choice to make and God has afforded you the power to make that choice; the very Spirit that raised Christ from the dead is here now, He is here with you right now and will be with you forever, if you so choose. God has done all in Christ on the cross for you, He does all even now with the very presence of His Spirit, He is here now with you. All hinges upon the choice you make.

Make the choice now my friends for when Judgment comes full on, we do not know who will die and who will live through it. When it comes, it comes. And it is coming. And we need to be in Christ when it does. Latch on to Him and never let go!

2Chr 30:3 For they could not keep it at that time, because the priests had not sanctified themselves sufficiently, neither had the people gathered themselves together to Jerusalem.

2Chr 30:4 And the thing pleased the king and all the congregation.

2Chr 30:5 So they established a decree to make proclamation throughout all Israel, from Beersheba even to Dan, that they should come to keep the passover unto the LORD God of Israel at Jerusalem: for they had not done [it] of a long [time in such sort] as it was written.

Mercy Triumphs Over Judgment
What an exemplary example of the Spirit of the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Hezekiah calls men back to God with open arms and a heart of mercy and compassion which looks to all the ways men may be received and all the ways he may show forth the compassion of the Lord to men. 

The law said to keep the Passover in the first month. Yet these people had not kept it in a long time. Now, in response to Hezekiah's call to repentance, men's hearts have turned back to God, yet not all have arrived in Jerusalem and worse yet, not all the Priests had sanctified themselves sufficiently.  

Hezekiah takes counsel and evidently searches the scriptures in an effort to get men back to proper service and worship as soon as possible. What does Hezekiah find? He finds that even in the law, the mercy of God is written! What rejoicing!!  Moses had a similar situation and in his appeal to God, God has His mercy written into the law!

The heart of God is to receive you. The heart of God is that you and He be reconciled. No matter where we look in the scripture we are bound to find that the heart of God is to make provision that men be reconciled to Himself. God always makes a way. Jesus Christ is that way, in Him, once and for all, that way has been made. 

God Will Make a Way. 
He Made A Way For Abraham. 
He Has Made a Way For You. 
Jesus Christ is the Way

We are in the last days and the modern day Church of Jesus Christ has departed from the simplicity of and true devotion to the Gospel. As the people of Hezekiah's day, the indictment of today's Church can be said the same way, "the priests [Pastors, leaders, called ones etc], had not sanctified themselves sufficiently" and "for they had not done [it] of a long [time in such sort] as it was written". 

Yet still the hand of God is stretched out through Jesus Christ to return to Him and be saved, be restored, be delivered. May I admonish you friends? Throw down everything but Jehovah God, Jesus Christ, the Holy Spirit and the Word of God, the Bible as it is written. Seek Jesus Christ and His power alone to save you and to be your source of all things till He comes again to gather you unto Himself.

The Kingly Wisdom of Divine Counsel

Prov 11:14 Where no counsel [is], the people fall: but in the multitude of counsellers [there is] safety.

In addition to assembling and fellowshipping with our brothers and sisters in Christ, the Lord has provided us with much counsel in the New testament. Read the Bible. Read the New Testament. Let the Apostles and the Holy Spirit of God speak wisdom to you through the Divine inspiration of scripture.  

Remember our ultimate and primary fellowship is with Christ. What better place for Divine Counsel than from the The Counselor Himself?

    Return To The Old Paths
    Atonement
      2Chr 30:1 And Hezekiah sent to all Israel and Judah, and wrote letters also to Ephraim and Manasseh, that they should come to the house of the LORD at Jerusalem, to keep the passover to the LORD God of Israel.

God sent a message and a messenger redeemer with an invitation to come and have everlasting fellowship with the LORD

We have been looking at the  2 Chronicles Hezekiah account. It is in essence the gospel, it is in itself a message of returning to the old paths; which today means return to the pure and true gospel of Jesus Christ; the Apostle's doctrine.

At some point we must look at some words and concepts which we observe in this 2 Chronicles text. We are at that point. These are essential to the events recorded in the 2 Chronicles account of the Hezekiah revival and to the message being spoken out of this account to us today. They are fundamental to the purpose of returning to the old paths. We have looked at Sanctification and Consecration and we have looked at Propitiation. Finally we will cover Atonement before we resume our tour through 2 Chronicles 29-32.
ATONEMENT
American Tract Society Bible Dictionary
The satisfaction offered to divine justice for the sins of mankind by the death of Jesus Christ; by virtue of which all true penitents believing in Christ are reconciled to God, are freed from the penalty of their sins, and entitled to eternal life. The atonement by Jesus Christ is the great distinguishing peculiarity of the gospel, and is presented in a great variety of terms and illustrations in both the Old Testament and the New. See REDEMPTION, SACRIFICES.

The English word atonement originally denoted the reconciliation of parties previously at variance. It is used in the Old Testament to translate a Hebrew word which means a covering; implying that by a Divine propitiation the sinner is covered from the just anger of God. This is actually effected by the death of Christ; while the ceremonial offerings of the Jewish church only secured from impending temporal judgments, and typified the blood of Jesus Christ which "cleanseth us from all sin."

The word Atonement is used once in the New testament. Although the idea, the concept, the fact of is shown over and again, but first, let's take a look at the first occurrence of it. 

First mention, almost always will set the meaning or definition of a term or concept throughout the rest of scripture, "almost always". We do want to let the bible define the bible. Let's go to Genesis Chapter 3.

First occurrence of the "act" of atonement: Genesis Chapter Three, the word does not appear here, but the act of atonement certainly does and it is God Himself who performs it.

Now let's look at the appearing of the word "atonement" in the New Testament. The word appears one time in Romans Chapter 5. And again, let the context speak to you.

Rom 5:8 But God commends his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.


Rom 5:9 Much more then, being now justified by his blood, we shall be saved from wrath through him.


Rom 5:10 For if, when we were enemies, we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son, much more, being reconciled, we shall be saved by his life.


Rom 5:11 And not only so, but we also joy in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, by whom we have now received the atonement.

[...] II. Define the term Atonement. 
The English word atonement is synonymous with the Hebrew word cofer. This is a noun from the verb caufar, to cover. The cofer or cover, was the name of the lid or cover of the ark of the covenant, and constituted what was called the mercy-seat. The Greek word rendered atonement is katallage. This means reconciliation to favour, or more strictly, the means or conditions of reconciliation to favour; from katallasso, to "change, or exchange." The term properly means substitution. An examination of these original words, in the connection in which they stand, will show that the atonement is the governmental substitution of the sufferings of Christ for the punishment of sinners. It is a covering of their sins by his sufferings.

IV. The fact of atonement. 

This is purely a doctrine of revelation, and in the establishment of this truth appeal must be made to the scriptures alone. 

1. The whole Jewish scriptures, and especially the whole ceremonial dispensation of the Jews, attest, most unequivocally, the necessity of an atonement. 

2. The New Testament is just as unequivocal in its testimony to the same point. The apostle Paul expressly asserts, that "without the shedding of blood, there is no remission of sin." 

I shall here take it as established, that Christ was properly "God manifest in the flesh," and proceed to cite a few out of the great multitude of passages, that attest the fact of his death, and also its vicarious nature; that is, that it was for us, and as a satisfaction to public justice for our sins, that his blood was shed. I will first quote a few passages to show that the atonement and redemption through it, was a matter of understanding and covenant between the Father and the Son. 


"I have made a covenant with my chosen, I have sworn unto David my servant. Thy seed will I establish for ever, and build up thy throne to all generations. Selah."-- Psa 89:3-4. 

"Yet it pleased the Lord to bruise him; he hath put him to grief: when thou shalt make his soul an offering for sin he shall see his seed, he shall prolong his days, and the pleasure of the Lord shall prosper in his hand. He shall see of the travail of his soul, and shall be satisfied; by his knowledge shall my righteous servant justify many; for he shall bear their iniquities. Therefore will I divide him a portion with the great, and he shall divide the spoil with the strong; because he hath poured out his soul unto death: and he was numbered with the transgressors; and he bare the sin of many, and made intercession for the transgressors."-- Isa 53:10-12.

I will next quote some passages to show, that, if sinners were to be saved at all, it must be through an atonement. 

"Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men whereby we must be saved."-- Act 4:12. 

"Be it known unto you therefore men and brethren, that through this man is preached unto you the forgiveness of sins: And by him all that believe are justified from all things, from which ye could not be justified by the law of Moses." Act 13:38-39. 

"Now we know, that what things soever the law saith, it saith to them who are under the law; that every mouth may be stopped, and all the world may become guilty before God. Therefore, by the deeds of the law there shall no flesh be justified in his sight: for by the law is the knowledge of sin." Rom 3:19-20. 

"Knowing that a man is not justified by the works of the law, but by the faith of Jesus Christ, even we have believed in Jesus Christ, that we might be justified by the faith of Christ, and not by the works of the law: for by the works of the law shall no flesh be justified. I do not frustrate the grace of God: for if righteousness come by the law, then Christ is dead in vain."-- Gal 2:16, Gal 2:21. 

"For as many as are of the works of the law are under the curse: for it is written, Cursed is every one that continueth not in all things which are written in the book of the law to do them. But that no man is justified by the law in the sight of God, it is evident: for, The just shall live by faith. And the law is not of faith: but the man that doeth them shall live in them. For if the inheritance be of the law, it is no more of promise: but God gave it to Abraham by promise. Wherefore then serveth the law? It was added because of transgressions, until the seed should come to whom the promise was made; and it was ordained by angels in the hand of a mediator. I will now cite some passages that establish the fact of the vicarious death of Christ, and redemption through his blood. 

"But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him, and with his stripes we are healed. All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned every one to his own way; and the Lord hath laid on him the iniquity of us all."-- Isa 53:5-6.

"Even as the Son of man came not to be ministered unto, but to minister, and to give his life a ransom for many."-- Mat 20:28. 

"For this is my blood of the new testament which is shed for many for the remission of sins."-- Mat 26:28. 

"And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of man be lifted up; that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have eternal life."-- Joh 3:14-15.

"I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me: and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved me, and gave himself for me. "Forasmuch as ye know that ye were not redeemed with corruptible things, as silver and gold, from your vain conversation received by tradition from your fathers; but with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and without spot."-- 1Pe 1:18-19.

"Who his own self bare our sins in his own body on the tree, that we being dead to sins should live unto righteousness; by whose stripes ye were healed."-- 1Pe 2:24. 

"For Christ also hath once suffered for sins, the just for the unjust, that he might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh, but quickened by the Spirit."-- 1Pe 3:18. 

"But if we walk in the light as he is in the light, we have fellowship one with another, and the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin."-- 1Jo 1:7. 

"And ye know that he was manifested to take away our sins; and in him is no sin."-- 1Jo 3:5. 

"In this was manifested the love of God toward us, because that God sent his only begotten Son into the world, that we might live through him. Herein is love, not that we loved God, but that he loved us, and sent his Son to be the propitiation for our sins."-- 1Jo 4:9-10. 

These, as every reader of the Bible must know, are only some of the passages that teach the doctrine of atonement and redemption by the death of Christ. It is truly wonderful in how many ways this doctrine is taught, assumed, and implied in the Bible. Indeed, it is emphatically the great theme of the Bible. It is expressed or implied upon nearly every page of Divine inspiration.

Propitiation 

    2Chr 30:1 And Hezekiah sent to all Israel and Judah, and wrote letters also to Ephraim and Manasseh, that they should come to the house of the LORD at Jerusalem, to keep the passover to the LORD God of Israel.

God sent a message and a messenger redeemer with an invitation to come and have everlasting fellowship with the LORD

We have been looking at the  2 Chronicles Hezekiah account. It is in essence the gospel, it is in itself a message of returning to the old paths; which today means return to the pure and true  gospel of Jesus Christ; the Apostle's doctrine.

At some point we must look at some words and concepts which we observe in this 2 Chronicles text. We are at that point. These are essential to the events recorded in the 2 Chronicles account of the Hezekiah revival and to the message being spoken out of this account to us today. They are fundamental to the purpose of returning to the old paths. We have looked at Sanctification and Consecration. Today we look at Propitiation.
PROPITIATION

The offering which appeases the wrath of one against whom an offence has been committed. Christ is "the propitiation for our sins," Ro 3:25, inasmuch as his sacrifice alone removes the obstacles which prevented the mercy of God from saving sinners, and appeases the just wrath of the law, 1Jo 2:2; 4:10. The same Greek word is used in the Septuagint to denote an "atonement," Nu 5:8; a "sin-offering," Eze 44:27; and the covering of the Ark of the Covenant, Le 16:14, Heb 9:5. See MERCY SEAT.

The Greek word hilasterion is the Greek rendering of the Hebrew kapporeth which refers to the Mercy Seat of the Ark. Hilasterion can be translated as either "propitiation" or "expiation" which then imply different functions of the Mercy Seat. The English dictionary definition of "propitiation" literally means to make favorable and specifically includes the idea of dealing with God’s wrath against sinners. Expiation literally means to make pious and implies either the removal or cleansing of sin.

The idea of propitiation includes that of expiation as its means, but the word "expiation" has no reference to quenching God’s righteous anger. The difference is that linguistically the object of expiation is sin, not God (that is, sin is removed, not God). Linguistically, one propitiates a person (makes them favorable), and one expiates a problem (removes it). Christ's death was therefore both an expiation and a propitiation. By expiating (removing the problem of) sin God was made propitious (favorable) to us.

Consecration.

This principally refers to the consecration of Aaron and his sons to the priestly office, which is given in detail in Ex. 29, and Lev. 8. They were washed, clothed, and anointed with oil. One bullock was offered for a sin offering, and one ram for a burnt offering; another ram was offered, and this ram is called 'the ram of consecration:' its blood was put upon the right ear, the thumb of the right hand, and the great toe of the right foot. Aaron and his sons were sprinkled with blood and anointed with oil. Parts of the ram were placed in the hands of Aaron and his sons, these were waved before the Lord, and then burnt on the altar upon the burnt offering. The breast of the ram was also waved before the Lord and was for Moses. Aaron and his sons ate of the flesh and other consecrations at the door of the Tabernacle.

The words mostly used for 'to consecrate' are mala yad, which signify 'to fill the hand' (as often rendered in the margin), doubtless alluding to their taking portions of the ram into their hands and waving them before Jehovah. Their hands being filled with offerings was suited to their character as priests to God. All was typical of believers being cleansed by water, sprinkled with blood, and anointed with oil: entirely consecrated to God, and constituted a priestly company for worship in the holiest.

(The message is clear. Power comes not without consecration to God. Consecration comes not without the shed blood of Christ our sacrificial Lamb.)

Our consecration is for the purpose of pointing to, revealing, bringing the presence of The Consecrated One, Jesus Christ.

Rev 5:14 And the four beasts said, Amen. And the four and twenty elders fell down and worshipped him that lives for ever and ever.

Notice "Has made" (Rev 1:6) and "have made" (Rev 5:10). 
It has been done and it has been done by someone.
1Pet 1:18 Forasmuch as ye know that ye were not redeemed with corruptible things, [as] silver and gold, from your vain conversation [received] by tradition from your fathers;

1Pet 1:19 But with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and without spot:

Return To The Old Paths
2Chr 30:1 And Hezekiah sent to all Israel and Judah, and wrote letters also to Ephraim and Manasseh, that they should come to the house of the LORD at Jerusalem, to keep the passover to the LORD God of Israel. 

God sent a message and a messenger redeemer with an invitation to come and have everlasting fellowship with the LORD
We have been looking at the  2 Chronicles Hezekiah account. It is in essence the gospel, it is in itself a message of returning to the old paths; which today means return to the pure and true  gospel of Jesus Christ; the Apostle's doctrine.

At some point we must look at some words and concepts which we observe in this 2 Chronicles text. This is that point. These are essential to the events recorded here and to the message being spoken out of them. They are fundamental to the purpose of returning to the old paths. Today we will look at Sanctification. Consecration, Propitiation and Atonement will be visited in another post. 

Remember in 2 Chronicles 29 vs 4 and 5, it says: "And he brought in the priests and the Levites, and gathered them together into the east street, And said to them, Hear me, you Levites, sanctify now yourselves, and sanctify the house of the LORD God of your fathers, and carry forth the filthiness out of the holy place."

Today's post may seem a bit academic, but understanding these terms is essential to the Gospel of Jesus Christ and the Work of the Holy Spirit in our lives. We will look at the basic meanings at this time.

Sanctify - Definition
To make holy, or to set apart for God, Ge 2:3 Ex 19:23. In the Old Testament, sanctification frequently denotes the ceremonial or ritual consecration of any person or thing to God: thus the Hebrews as a people were holy unto the Lord, through the covenant with its rites and atoning sacrifices, Ex 31:13; and the Jewish tabernacle, altar, priest, etc., were solemnly set apart for the divine service, Le 8:10-12. In the similar sense, men, "sanctified themselves" who made special preparation for the presence and worship of God, Ex 19:10, 11 Nu 11:18; a day was sanctified when set apart for fasting and prayer, Joe 1:14; and the Sabbath was sanctified when regarded and treated as holy unto the Lord, De 5:12. All such sanctifications were testimonials to the holiness of God, and signified men’s need of moral sanctification, or the devotion of purified and obedient souls to his love and service.

In a doctrinal sense, sanctification is the making truly and perfectly holy what was before defiled and sinful. It is a progressive work of divine grace upon the soul justified by the love of Christ. The believer is gradually cleansed from the corruption of his nature, and is at length presented "unspotted before the throne of God with exceeding joy." The Holy Spirit performs this work in connection with the providence and word of God, John 14:26; 17:17; 2Th 2:13 1Pe 1:2 and the highest motives urge every Christian not to resist him, and seek to be holy even as God is holy. The ultimate sanctification of every believer in Christ is a covenant mercy purchased on the cross. He, who saves us from the penalty of sin, also saves us from its power; and in promising to bring a believer into heaven, engages also to prepare for heaven.

THE MERCY AND COMPASSION OF GOD
Intention of God/Power behind the message being sent./ Blessing in the results of our obedient and grateful heartfelt response to the call of God.

The wrath of God abides on the disobedient. The wrath of God abode on Israel and Judah at the time Hezekiah came to reign. No one can escape the wrath of God aside from the gracious work of God in the heart of those He calls. The wrath of God abides upon this Nation and all the disobedient in it. Even as Hezekiah sent letters of invitation to a backslid and disobedient people upon whom the wrath of God abode so God has sent His Son Jesus Christ to a world of lost and rebellious people upon whom the wrath of God abides. And now, at this time, we who are called are, as ambassadors of Jesus Christ, sent to bring invitation to a rebellious and stubborn people, a backslid people upon whom the wrath of God abides.  God's mercy overflows and reaches out to you even now. For you who know the Lord, it is your commission to hold forth the Words of Life and the redemption found in Jesus Christ to a rebellious and lost people upon whom the wrath of God abides, even at a time when the wrath of God is coming upon this Nation, the United States of America and the Church therein. It is not too late for you. As you look around and see the mess you are in, the mess this Nation is in, it is not too late for you. God's mercy is held out still. Turn to Jesus Christ your only hope and let Him do His perfect work in you. 
Eph 5:6 Let no man deceive you with vain words: for because of these things cometh the wrath of God upon the children of disobedience.

See the heart and intention of God in the following testimony regarding how God lavished His love upon Israel. This same heart and intention of God is focused on you. 
Deut 32:1 Give ear, O you heavens, and I will speak; and hear, O earth, the words of my mouth.

Deut 32:2 My doctrine shall drop as the rain, my speech shall distil as the dew, as the small rain on the tender herb, and as the showers on the grass:

Deut 32:3 Because I will publish the name of the LORD: ascribe you greatness to our God.

Deut 32:4 He is the Rock, his work is perfect: for all his ways are judgment: a God of truth and without iniquity, just and right is he.

Deut 32:5 They have corrupted themselves, their spot is not the spot of his children: they are a perverse and crooked generation.

Deut 32:6 Do you thus requite the LORD, O foolish people and unwise? is not he your father that has bought you? has he not made you, and established you?

Deut 32:7 Remember the days of old, consider the years of many generations: ask your father, and he will show you; your elders, and they will tell you.

Deut 32:8 When the Most High divided to the nations their inheritance, when he separated the sons of Adam, he set the bounds of the people according to the number of the children of Israel.

Deut 32:9 For the LORD's portion is his people; Jacob is the lot of his inheritance.

Deut 32:10 He found him in a desert land, and in the waste howling wilderness; he led him about, he instructed him, he kept him as the apple of his eye.

Deut 32:11 As an eagle stirs up her nest, flutters over her young, spreads abroad her wings, takes them, bears them on her wings:

If God were to give us what I deserve, we would have lake front property. There is a place with ever expanding lots of lake front property. Right now the lease is lasting 1000 years. After that we would go swimming in the lake of fire for ever and ever.
Rev 20:11 And I saw a great white throne, and him that sat on it, from whose face the earth and the heaven fled away; and there was found no place for them.

Rev 20:12 And I saw the dead, small and great, stand before God; and the books were opened: and another book was opened, which is the book of life: and the dead were judged out of those things which were written in the books, according to their works.

Rev 20:13 And the sea gave up the dead which were in it; and death and hell delivered up the dead which were in them: and they were judged every man according to their works.

Rev 20:14 And death and hell were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death.

Rev 20:15 And whoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire.

Isaiah 5:14 Therefore hell has enlarged herself, and opened her mouth without measure: and their glory, and their multitude, and their pomp, and he that rejoices, shall descend into it.
Like Israel in the Passage above from Deuteronomy, we too fit this indictment, 

"Deut 32:5 They have corrupted themselves, their spot is not the spot of his children: they are a perverse and crooked generation.

Deut 32:6 Do you thus requite the LORD, O foolish people and unwise? is not he your father that has bought you? has he not made you, and established you?"

Paul the Apostle of Jesus Christ has good news for those of us who respond to Jesus Christ and obey the Gospel. 

1Pet 4:17 For the time [is come] that judgment must begin at the house of God: and if [it] first [begin] at us, what shall the end [be] of them that obey not the gospel of God?

Listen to the Words of the Apostle Paul, these words are for you, and you can be a recipient of these great promises by the power of the Spirit of the living God, by the power of Jesus Christ. 

Eph 2:1 And you [hath he quickened], who were dead in trespasses and sins;

Eph 2:2 Wherein in time past ye walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that now worketh in the children of disobedience:

Eph 2:3 Among whom also we all had our conversation in times past in the lusts of our flesh, fulfilling the desires of the flesh and of the mind; and were by nature the children of wrath, even as others.

Eph 2:4 But God, who is rich in mercy, for his great love wherewith he loved us,

Eph 2:5 Even when we were dead in sins, hath quickened us together with Christ, (by grace ye are saved;)

Eph 2:6 And hath raised [us] up together, and made [us] sit together in heavenly [places] in Christ Jesus:

Eph 2:7 That in the ages to come he might shew the exceeding riches of his grace in [his] kindness toward us through Christ Jesus.

Eph 2:8 For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: [it is] the gift of God:

Eph 2:9 Not of works, lest any man should boast.

Jer 31:35 Thus saith the LORD, which giveth the sun for a light by day, [and] the ordinances of the moon and of the stars for a light by night, which divideth the sea when the waves thereof roar; The LORD of hosts [is] his name:

Jer 31:36 If those ordinances depart from before me, saith the LORD, [then] the seed of Israel also shall cease from being a nation before me for ever.

Jer 31:37 Thus saith the LORD; If heaven above can be measured, and the foundations of the earth searched out beneath, I will also cast off all the seed of Israel for all that they have done, saith the LORD.

Jer 31:38 Behold, the days come, saith the LORD, that the city shall be built to the LORD from the tower of Hananeel unto the gate of the corner.

Jer 31:39 And the measuring line shall yet go forth over against it upon the hill Gareb, and shall compass about to Goath.

Jer 31:40 And the whole valley of the dead bodies, and of the ashes, and all the fields unto the brook of Kidron, unto the corner of the horse gate toward the east, [shall be] holy unto the LORD; it shall not be plucked up, nor thrown down any more for ever.
